چکیده

Despite widespread research effort in recent years, design methods to estimate the shaft resistance of displacement piles continue to rely heavily upon empirical correlations. In an attempt to achieve a more reliable design approach several researchers have assembled databases of instrumented pile load tests and used these to propose new design methods e.g. American Petroleum Institute (API-2000) for piles in sand and Lehane et al. (2000) for piles in clay. The most significant contribution to our understanding of displacement pile behaviour has resulted from field tests using highly instrumented piles, most notably those conducted with the Imperial College (IC) instrumented test pile (Bond 1989, Lehane 1992 and Chow 1997). These findings have been synthesised in the MTD design approach (Jardine et al. 2005), which has been shown to be more reliable than traditional design approaches at estimating the shaft resistance of driven piles. However, Randolph (2003) highlights the continuing presence of empirical factors in many new design approaches and demonstrates the need to understand the physical mechanisms governing pile capacity.

Analysis of Consolidation around Driven Piles in Overconsoli Dated Clay

The principal objective of this thesis is to assess the capabilities of an already established analytical framework for understanding and predicting the behavior of piles driven in highly overconsolidated clays (OCR24). The skin friction mobilized during pile loading to failure depends on the sequence of preceding events, i.e. pile installation and soil consolidation. This research utilizes the...

Shaft Resistance of Driven Piles Based on CPT and CPTu Results Using GMDH-type Neural Networks and Genetic Algorithms

Cone penetration test is one of the most common in-situ tests for pile analysis given that by its analogy as a model pile, the measured cone resistance and sleeve friction can be employed for estimation of pile unit toe and shaft resistances, respectively. In this paper, group method of data handling (GMDH)-type neural networks optimized using Genetic algorithms (GAs) are used for modelling the...

The Influence of Negative Skin Friction on Piles and Pile Groups & Settlement of existing Structures

Negative skin friction occurs when concrete piles are situated in soft soils, consolidating soilmass, etc., resulting in a downward force that increases loading on shaft piles and reduces the bearing capacity of the piles. A new concept based on the shifting rate of piles, and the settlement rate of the surrounding soils has been suggested far the study of negative skin friction. Negative skin ...

A Comparison of Different Non-linear Numerical Models for Pier Shaft Interaction Analysis for study of the Seismic Performance of Bridges

The AASHTO code of practice for design of bridges shows that the ductility level for foundation is given equal to one. Bridges are classified in three classes. For class of essential and normal bridges a question for not to use ductility level due to the importance of bridges’ costs is become an important item in different countries particularly in Middle east. This paper aimed to study on pe...

Centrifuge modelling of sand compaction piles in soft clay under embankment load

Sand compaction piles are used in practice for ground improvement of soft subsoil in order to accelerate consolidation, reduce compressibility, and increase strength. The current design procedure of sand compaction piles is based on simple empirical calculations, which does not take full account of the sand pile behaviour. This research project investigates the behaviour of a base reinforced em...
